Why do people keep banging on about the AE86?

Some of you may be asking yourself this question.

It is a bit odd to think that given the cheap available power at hand with cars like the 200SX and older Skylines, that people still favour the old Corolla/Sprinter Trueno/Levin for some reason.

Why? well, check this video and you'll see why! This still remains one of the most sideways and well balanced drifting cars money can buy.

Drift Atlanta

I found this picture on Flickr which shows a few of the most popular drift cars.

From left to right, S13, 350Z, S14 another S13 and a BMW on the end.

The first S13 seems to have a rather major battle scar!

Drift King demonstrates Inertia Drift

Here's a great clip of Keiichi Tsuchiya drifting the Kei S15. This is dangerous high speed drifting using Inertia Drift, also known as Kansei Drift (Kansai Drift, Kenseii Drift) or Accel Off

Not for the feint hearted, but damn impressive!

AE86 Drifting T-shirt

Well, after all this drifting talk, it's about time I plugged some of my t-shirts.

This is a closeup of one of my designs, this (as many of you will know) is a Toyota AE86. On the other hand, some of you who are new to this may not have heard of it.

I have written an article on the the AE86 over on the Sideways Clothing site.

Mitsubishi Galant FTO Coupe

The Galant FTO Coupe is another retro Japanese ride which is screaming out for some drifting action.

I think this is one classy looking beast, and after dropping a more modern engine in, this thing would go like it looks!

The factory engine was a 120PS 1.6 Litre lump, if memory serves, it was called a "Neptune" engine. Spares for these things will be pretty scarce, reinforcing the justification for an engine transplant. I think a light block V8 would suit a car like this, I can just hear it roaring now! I don't think Mitsubishi have every made a V8, so one would probably have to be sourced from another Jap marque, or mayebe even the light and versatile RoverV8 (stop laughing, that's what's in most TVR and Lotus Esprit you know!)

Sadly, these things are really rare. But they do come up for aution every now and again, so I'll be keeping my eyes open!

Girls can drift too !

Drifting in the UK is a male dominated sport. There are pretty much zero female drifters, and certainly no pros. Which is a shame because while it's still male dominated in Japan, it does have a female following.

And these girls can really drift! check out this clip from a girl only drift session over in Japan.
