Toyota AE86

Corolla, Levin and Sprinter Trueno

1984 - 1987

This is the daddy of all drift cars and with the most complex model lineup and history. So no doubt this article will gradually expand as I tell you more!

There were three main models, Corolla, Levin and Sprinter Trueno, although all were JDM and very rarely seen in the UK. The Corolla we got, although visually similar, was front wheel drive and no good for drifting.

Back in 2001, nearly half of the cars competing in D1GP were AE86s. In 2002 a third of the cars were AE86. So sadly the AE86 is now not often seen as a professional drift car. Partly becuase they are now alot slower than the competition, but partly becuase they have appreciated in value so much, you'd have to be crazy to risk damaging one!

Nevertheless, a handfull are still raced in D1GP (six in fact) and amazingly, they can still hold their own! Toshiki Yoshioka took fifth place in the 2006 D1GP in his Trueno. And famously, Taka Aono still races his AE86 in the Formula D Series.
